Episode 2: Re-using Characters
When it comes time to make characters for a new game, one’s eye often drifts to a character sheet from a different time. Whether the player’s gaze is drawn to past characters by fond memories of adventures, regret for journeys not yet traveled and concepts not fully realized, or the allure of powerful magical equipment obtained on past excursions, there are myriad reasons a player of D&D might want to re-use a character from the past. In this episode, the Critical Wits crew shares stories of re-used characters, explores when it is and isn’t appropriate to revisit old PCs, and discusses how it can be done right and how it can be done so very, very wrong.

Sadly…I must wait for MP3 to get this since I listen to my podcasts during my commute…
Very good interactions between the three hosts. The version agnostic focus works very well so far. Keep it up.
Yeah, no thanks. If someone came into my campaign and wanted to use a character from some other game, I’d have to respectfully tell them that that’s not going to happen. If you are joining my gaing group, you’re making a new character. Period.
To expand on my post above: if you want to make a character with a similar background, etc. as a character from one of your old games, no problem. But you’re only using an old character, especially one loaded up with equipment that they were given during the course of some other GM’s campaign, if I’m running a game with similar-level characters and they are similarly stacked with awesome gear. Bottom line: bringing in a character from another game is entirely up to GM decision, and a good GM will talk to players who make such requests. Be a cool GM and listen to a player. But if you’re me, you’re probably going to say a gentle “No.” 😉 (unless there are extreme mitigating circumstances)
Critical Wits the first show was good a little run on, but good.
Second show was awful, bad topic followed by pedantic droning on and on, while really just complaining about 1 player’s elf wizard and how it’s okay for everyone else to re-use characters.
If you have a problem with a player don’t make a podcast just to talk shit about him.
Talk to the player.
I challenge
I challenge someone to bring up the merit of this show and how it wasn’t a complete waste of time.
Mort,
I believe you may have misinterpreted the final message of the episode. The big point we were trying to make in this was moderation. While we brought our friend’s tendency to playing a single character up as an example of extremism, we did attempt to emphasize the necessity of using common sense and moderation in using characters multiple times.
In case they were missed, we also included other examples of extremes in reusing characters.
For future reference, Mort, while I will tolerate (barely) abusive comments towards the show itself, I will not tolerate any towards our other listeners. Your other comment has been scrubbed.
I found the cast from your 5e episode which I enjoyed, then went back to the beginning. The 1st ep was good.
However I think you missed the point of my distaste with the 2nd ep. If you have a problem with a player talk to them about it. If this person is your friend it should be fine. Do not make fun of or berate the person behind his back.
It’s all perspective, in both cases I think my comments were how abusive I found your show and the other listener’s comment.
Please continue to allow others to post negative abusive comments, in case you missed it that other person’s comment is less than positive.
Please feel free to delete this comment as well.
To be clear, we HAVE spoken with our friend about the issue. We were not berating him behind his back.
Also, to be clear: There is a difference between making a negative comment and being abusive. Your other comment was the latter.
Great Podcast, I have just comeback to First Edition this year, my group, is all new Characters. The mix is My son’s friends, who have never played before, and an old DM who has played extensively, 1E thru 4E. Re: Reusing a Character, back in the 80’s, I was able to use my character, across campaigns, pending a DM review. It would be a negotiation, most likely remove powerful magic weapons, scale back your level etc, so its a good fit with the group. If all else fails..new Char all the way, or “When you DM someday, you can allow it”. Great job, I enjoy, RFI and I really enjoy the tech aspects you talk about across all Editions and Pathfinder. Moving on to Ep 3 now. Thanks.
