Homebrew: D&D Next Playtest #4 Module

Hello, everyone! First of all, I’d just like to thank all you readers for the great response my article “An Alternative to Combat Expertise” got. The reception has been really positive, which pleasantly surprised me, seeing as how tabletop game fans can be a surly lot when it comes to messing around with the rules, especially when new editions are involved. Everyone has had great feedback, and I loved hearing everyone’s ideas and personal anecdotes on devising similar systems for their home games.

Even Mike Mearls, the lead designer for D&D Next, had good things to say about it!

I mentioned in the article that I might be working on a playable module for the current playtest that allows one to test my proposed changes, and the response emboldened me to really push through getting this in your hands as soon as possible. The numbers have been crunched, the mechanics have been re-worked, and thousands and thousands of words have been retyped to bring you this: D&D Next Playtest #4 Module: Critical Wits “Alternative to Combat Expertise” Edition!

This module presents errata and alternative documents that allow you to play a version of the game that implements my ideas from “An Alternative to Combat Expertise“, while otherwise keeping the experience as close to the current playtest as possible. Give it a play through, compare it with the current playtest rules and let me know what you think! I’m looking forward to hearing what did and didn’t work for your group.
